The Rasta Connection

"A man who cuts his hair is like a tree without leaves."
Rastafarian Proverb

(Author's note: I am not an expert on Rastafarianism and will not attempt to give a full interpretation of the sacred religion. Through this brief overview, you will get an understanding of Rastafarianism and hopefully further your studies through other deep and wonderful resources in books and the Internet. See resources listed at the back of this book.)

During the late 60's through early 70's, Jamaican reggae musicians exposed dreadlocks to the world during world tours. The most popular was the band of Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, and Peter Tosh -- known as Bob Marley and the Wailers.

The Wailers adopted Rastafarianism as their religion and lifestyle. The religion existed many years before the Wailers hit the music scene with massive dreadlocks and soul stirring reggae music.

Rastafarians believe when Ras Tafari, a direct descendent of the biblical David, became the Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia; he fulfilled the prophecy the messiah had come. When Italy invaded Ethiopia in 1935, however, King Haile Selassie I was forced into exile. His followers vowed to never cut their hair until his return to his throne.

With the help of a small army from Winston Churchill, Emperor Haile Selassie I regained his seat on the throne. Upon his returned, his country had declined considerably with widespread poverty, high crime, and civil uprisings.

Soon his local opposition mounted an attack on his ministry and administration. They executed many in his cabinet and placed the Emperor under house arrest in a small apartment. He remained there until his death in August 27 1975.

Rastafarians pay homage to the Emperor through dreadlocks and worship him as the living Jehovah. Their lives are healthy, natural, pure, and holy. They follow many scriptures in the Bible justifying dreadlocks and the detriment of cutting hair.

Numbers 6:5 states: "All the days of the vow of the separations, no razor shall pass over this head. Until the day be fulfilled of his consecration to the Lord, he shall be holy, and shall let the hair of his head grow." And Leviticus 21:5: "They shall not make baldness upon their head." Other scriptures include Judges 16:19, Ezekiel 8:3 and 44:20, and 1King 1:52.
