Dreadlocks Today"God made us in his perfect creation. He made no mistake when
he made us black with kinky hair." Dreadlocks are "HOT," in style, and are fast becoming the new freedom of expression in America. Once seen only on tropical islands, such as Jamaica, dreadlocks are now in every city and many countries. From spiritual reasons or just making a fashion statement, one thing is for sure - dreadlocks are here to stay. It doesn't matter what you do or where you are from. From blue-collar workers to high profile executives, students in high school to Ivy League colleges, or singles to married couples, you will find someone who has allowed their hair to develop dreadlocks. The advertising world has embraced this hairstyle and, in many ways, encouraging its increased popularity. Television and print media are showcasing actors and models with dreadlocks selling everything from soft drinks to cellular phones. Musicians most associated with dreadlocks are reggae performers. This is due, in part, to their Rastafarian religion. Today artists from R&B, Rock-N-Roll, Heavy Metal, Classical, Jazz, Blues, Salsa, Africana, and other styles of music are creating unique personas with dreadlocks. And, in the words of Bob Marley, they are "Jammin' till the jam is through." High-profile athletes are wearing dreadlocks straight into the record books. Lennox Lewis (world heavy weight champion boxer), Brian Grant (professional basketball player), and Edgerrin James (professional football player) have popularized their respected sports with dreadlocks. They are electrifying performers, excellent role models, and wear their dreadlocks with dignity whether under the helmet or free flowing. On television, One Life to Live star Timothy D. Stickney, with shoulder-length dreadlocks, continues to break housewives hearts everyday. Haitian born Alex Désert stars as Jake, the funny blind man with natural dreadlocks on CBS hit comedy Becker. He is also leading vocals for ska/reggae band "Hepcats". Keith Hamilton Cobb, of the sci-fi hit Andromeda, says in the book Dreads by Francesco Mastalia and Alfonse Pagano, "At the risk of sounding arrogant, I think dreads, when worn with pride, give a man a regal bearing. The image is a powerful one, like that of a lion and his mane." Of course, we cannot leave out Whoopie Goldberg -- the most-popular actor with dreadlocks of all time. She arrived in Hollywood with her "happy to be nappy" attitude, and continues to lead major movies into grossing hundreds of million of dollars. Alice Walker and Toni Morrison have changed the face of literature wearing their dreadlocks with pride, dignity, and passion. Ms. Walker wrote the best selling book The Color Purple, which later became a blockbuster movie. She also wrote the preface to Dreads and many other articles on dreadlocks. Here's a quote from speech given on Founders Day, April 11, 1987, at Spelman College in Atlanta. "Eventually I knew precisely what hair wanted: it wanted to grow, to be itself, to attract lint, if that was its destiny, but to be left alone by anyone, including me, who did not love it as it was. What do you think happened? (Other than that I was now able, as an added bonus, to comprehend Bob Marley as the mystic his music always indicated he was.) The ceiling at the top of my brain lifted, once again my mind (and spirit) could get outside myself. I would not be stuck in restless stillness, but would continue to grow. The plant was above the ground!" Toni Morrison, with a lioness mane of grayish-white dreadlocks, is one of the few individuals to receive Nobel Prize for Literature, the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, and the National Book Critics' Award. Her powerful fiction novel, Beloved, was later made into a critically acclaimed movie starring Oprah Winfrey These individuals are great examples dispelling all myths surrounding dreadlocks. With focus of steel, determination, and un-waving faith, they have become successful wearing this "controversial" hairstyle. Young, old, black, and white are inspired to grow dreadlocks and live their dreams. Copyright 2006 by NetNia Publishing - All Rights Reserved --
