Meditating on Your Dreadlocks
Meditation is the art of
bringing peace and quietness to your mind. It is as excellent form
of relaxation where you simply do nothing but listen to your mind or
think positive actions.
Meditate in the morning to feed
the mind with positive affirmations and thoughts for a successful
day. In the evenings, it's a great tool to help you release stress
from a busy or hectic day.
There is no one absolute way to
meditate because it depends on the individual's lifestyle. Try
different ways (use candles, relaxing music, bubble baths, reclining
chair, etc.) until you find one that works for you. All it takes is
patience and practice, practice, practice. Also, several wonderful
books are available at your local library or bookstore.
People who practice daily
mediation have improved their spirituality, reduced stress, better
organized their thoughts, improved concentration, remembered more,
and have more energy.

Plan to set aside
five to twenty minutes everyday for meditation. The following
method is simple, effective, and not too time consuming. Before
meditating, make sure you understand the following directions. Of
most importance, you must not be disturbed or distracted during your
meditating session.
When you first
start meditating, all types of things will be going through your
mind. Do not worry if you are doing it correctly or not. With time
and patience, you will learn to quiet your mind and concentrate on
the process of inner peace and calmness.
If you need
assistance or a better understanding of the process, take a
class. Find information in the yellow pages or the newspaper.
Also, check with your local community college, natural foods store,
or bookstores for those who teach meditation as well.
The following basic
procedure is easy to learn and practice:
-
Practice
meditation daily for at least thirty to sixty minutes.
-
Find a quiet
place in the house or on your job where you won't be disturbed.
Let everyone know. Put a "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door to
re-enforce your need for privacy.
-
Sit upright in
a comfortable chair or sit cross-legged if this works better for
you. Hold your head up, close your eyes, and concentrate on
relaxing your entire body. Try not to think about anything but
total relaxation.
-
Once you are
comfortable, take deep breaths and count backward slowly from
number ten. With each breath, you are becoming increasingly
mentally relaxed, until you reach the number one.
-
Use progressive
relaxation to relax your entire body. Imagine a warm, tingly
feeling moving slowly and systematically up your body from your
toes all the way to the very top of your head. Repeat for every
part of your body until you are fully relaxed.
-
Once you are
completely relaxed, many thoughts will pass through your mind.
Do not stop the flow or concentrate on any thought. Your mind
is getting rid of all the thoughts that are causing stress in
your life.
-
Let yourself
and your emotions go. After a few moments, you will feel a
sense of quietness and nothingness. You are then in a
meditative state.
-
Breathe out the
negative feelings and emotions; breathe in positive, life-giving
air. Float freely. Relax. Expect to achieve; expect to
accomplish your desires; expect to win. Accept less, but push
on to attain more. The higher your goals, the further you will
go.
-
As you
practice, you will learn how to concentrate better. When you
meditate, negative thoughts will slow and you will have full
control over your mind.
Other means of meditation and
relaxation include exercise or sports. The body needs physical
stimulation to pump blood into all its extremities, and to give the
heart a good workout. Exercise is a wonderful way to let the mind
relax as you place your thoughts on the way your body moves. For
many people, sports and exercise are enjoyable ways to feel alive,
youthful, and fulfilled. |
